At times when attempting to use a TwinGig card on a 4500 chassis that already has 1 of the ten gig ports in use you may get an error like this:
“Failed to read seeprom on port Te5/2. Reinsert X2 module or configure GigabitEthernet port group if TwinGigConverter is installed.” This means it’s not configured to use the X2 port as dual 1 gigs. Type the following command to change the mode.
“hw-module module 5 port-group 2 select gigabitethernet”
In the above example, the 2nd port group on slot 5 (aka Ten5/2) will be setup to used as dual 1 gig ports.
Once the command is entered, you should see the following message confirming the change:
“Port Te5/2: TwinGig Converter inserted: vendor: CISCO SYSTEMS, p/n: 800-27645-02, s/n: XXXXXXX”
If you happen to have dual supervisors in “redundancy mode” be aware when attempting to reload the chassis (versus just 1 card, or a sup module) you need to enter the following:
“redundancy reload shelf”, otherwise you will just reload the active supervisor module.
